Pictures from lessons

As promised, photos of the lessons I have taught for the past two days. It has been really fun although noisy. It really reminds me of Harmony House. I also did a presentation to year 1 students yesterday and got them to try Tim Tams and Vegemite. I told them that vegemite was Australian Chocolate and they all had to try it. It is always a good prank to play on people that don't know how vegemite tastes like. I have only taught the younger kids up this point and got them to name and colour the various animals that I introduced.

Photos of the "Introduction to Australia" presentation I delivered to primary 1 kids at the music auditorium.

Touching the tip of Taipei 101

Random post about Taipei 101

First Lesson at WuXing Elementary School

Just finished my first lesson for a primary three class and felt it was really enriching although extremely noisy. I showed the kids some videos about Australian animals and had them colour the animals in my handout. I tried really hard not to speak chinese but inadvertently spoke a lot as I felt the kids had trouble understanding what I said. It could also be because I spoke to quickly and I have to remind myself in future lessons to slow down. I was busy setting things up that I did not take too many pictures. I will make up for it in my second lesson in an hour time. I think I should incorporate more videos in my presentation as I think kids retain more information from videos.

Harmony House Charity Dinner

I went for dinner with EPs staying at Harmony House. We went to a place near Shilin night market although I don't know the exact location. Most of the Harmony House's kids were in attendance and they were really cute. Only pictures do them justice.

The kid in most of the pictures is called Lai Lai and he was sitting on my lap. He was really cute and active. I felt kinda sad when I heard about their story as they are staying at Harmony Home either because they are HIV positive or their parents are HIV positive. Really admire the work of the volunteers to start such a house.

First full weekend in Taiwan

It was a really busy weekend in Taiwan as we had a gathering with AIESEC members from National Taiwan University on Friday night. There were 12 of us and we all crashed at Lyo's place for the night. It was Disston's 18th birthday on Friday and we had a couple of drinks to celebrate.

Although I was really tired on Saturday, I still wanted to go to Jiufen and went with Bernard, Mark, Wanling and two other AIESEC members from National Taiwan University. The views were really good up the mountain and the food was really unique. Taiwanese like typical Singaporeans ate anything and this included wild boars, tongues and the works. I am kinda bumped that I did not bring my camera and will upload more when I get some photos from Mark. We also went to Shilin night market that night and basically ate everything. I had stinky tofu for the first time and it was really good albeit the initial smell. Lyo's driving was well reckless to say the least but at least I got home safe. I have previously been to Shilin night market about four years ago and the place kinda looks the same but I think some shops have changed. I still find the place endearing in a certain way.

After the mistake of not bringing my camera on Saturday, I finally did remember to bring it on Sunday to the museum. It was called Gugong museum and was near Dazhi Mrt Station. It basically showcased the history of China and paid particular attention to the Song Dynasty. I was fascinated by the artwork, artefacts and calligraphy and the amount of detail they were able to achieve with minimal technology. I could not take pictures of the inside of the museum but had some random shots at the gates.

Sports Day Practice at Wu Xing Elementary School

I saw the kids practicing for their sports day today and they looked really professional. I did not realize that there were so many students in the elementary school.

Pictures of lunch everyday except on Wednesday. The food is apparently a healthy option in comparison to hawker food. I think it tastes pretty good and it might help with my perpetually weak stomach.
